Re-Aligning Your Business

There comes a point where you have to stand back and survey your business, realign with your goals and values, and adjust before things get sideways or out of control.

If you can recognize the shifts required, tweaking and tuning your operations at regular intervals, you will be highly successful in your chosen field.

There are 5 questions to ask, the first 3 we’ll take a look at now, and in the next post we’ll cover the remaining 2.

You might be surprised at your findings and it may explain why your business isn’t powering ahead how you’d like it to be.

Who are you doing this for?

You, your market, the world, big question right?

No doubt, some of what you do is for you..ie.make more money, have more control, all those things and plus some.  And most likely you’re not completely self serving, maybe you do want to create change in your market, have a global impact.  If you do then Why? Dig a little deeper under the surface.

Everybody has their own reasons for doing what they do, but if your rationale is because you want a better lifestyle with the “more money and more control” scenario but you’re having to pump in 80hrs a week, then the scales probably aren’t tilting in your favor are they?

Take a good look at the core reasoning of who you’re doing it for and why you do it, then marry those against your business operations… is there congruency?… does it fit?…are you happy?… if not then make changes.

Whats your income goal?

Yessiree how much do you want to make? (hint, don’t say lots).

Have you really defined the amount, is it realistic in terms of the amount of input you can provide, do you have the systems, and processes to support reaching your target. Can you do it on your own, do you need to build a team. Do you need to reassess your goal or restructure work flow and delegation to make it easier to attain.

Remember if you’re not making enough money there can only be two reasons, either you’re not providing enough value or you’re holding yourself back somehow.  Profound eh?…no just realistic!

Are you keeping up your end of the bargain?

In other words are you keeping your promises to clients, staff, vendors, yourself?

Each of these areas can cause stress fractures in your business and any combination can bring your business to its knees.

Think about it…you let your clients or customers down, they vote with their feet and you see sales walking out the door, referral rates drop, and loyalty disintegrates.

Unhappy staff lead to high turn over, lack of pride in the job, and no respect for the chain of command.

Letting yourself down creates resentment about what your doing and why you’re doing it, and after a while your well oiled machine will squeak to a halt.

Clearly define what you will and won’t do, be consistent and follow through on your promises to create a super strong business, that leaves no room for misinterpretation by anybody.

I hope these have given you some food for thought, leave your comments below and be sure to read the next installment.

  1. Hi Jackie,

You’ve definitely given me food for thought!

“Remember if you’re not making enough money there can only be two reasons, either you’re not providing enough value or you’re holding yourself back somehow.” So true! Ultimately it’s something we are not willing to do, such as stepping out of our comfort zone and entering the unknown.

Also the WHY in your business as you stated is so important! Once I got clear on this, putting all the vain reasons behind and seeing what’s at the core, I was able to align me actions with my desires and most importantly continue to fight through the obstacles that constantly come up.

Without a strong WHY you will easily give up.

    Great post Jackie… loved it!

    • Hi Michele

I think we all sit in that place of fear from time to time, and when you get down to the nuts and bolts of an issue, it is always fear (in its different guises) that holds far too many of us back.

Clarity is the difference that makes the difference. It’s amazing the shifts that happen once you’ve got a grip on your “why”

Glad you enjoyed the post, thanks for stopping by :)

  2. No doubt you’ve had a lot of experience in business, Jackie — it shines through in every paragraph here.

I can feel the confidence in your voice and the “been there, done that” innuendo, as well.

I’m going to deem this post …
    A “business booty kickin’”

“Yessiree how much do you want to make? (hint, don’t say lots).”

Would it be okay if I just said a wheelbarrow full? LOL ;)
