For the past couple of years, I have chosen three key words which become my focus for the following year, a concept introduced to me by Chris Brogan.
The idea behind this is to form a focus around how to base your decisions and their alignment with your longer term goals, so that you don’t drift off track.
My words for this year, as you can see were courage, discipline and fun. (yes I know discipline is misspelled in the picture, blame it on the wine at the time)
All in all I tried to keep these words at the forefront of my mind when faced with choices, and yes I’ve drawn on courage and discipline heavily this year. Fun probably could of got a bigger slice of the action, but overall the words seemed destined to be a good fit for the events of 2012.
As we’re coming close to the end of 2012, its time to start thinking about next years words, and what the focus will be on.
I wanted to share this with you to get you thinking about doing an exercise like this for yourself. Pick your theme words for the year, just three of them, and stick them up big and bold so they are there as a constant reminder of the commitment you have made to yourself. Oh yeah and try to get the spelling right
If you’d like to share you words, let me know in the comments below. If not, that’s just fine and dandy too. But maybe you’d like to share this idea with your friends, and give them a kick start into 2013 with some powerful focus.

Hi Jackie
Blame on the wine, eh? LOL
Never thought about picking a few words to focus on, it was more like projects. In the spring I had made a goal for the month and was able to keep it. Got to do more of that.
It has been a crazy year for me, but I think it was getting certain things behind me…like old employer, tons of negative stuff there. Have some things still before an end to that, but I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Been trying to work on a few phrases. “Let it go!” and “In the moment!” When the stress gets a bit much I try those phrases.
Now for the new year I shall have to think about what I want to accomplish and then what I absolutely want to accomplish. I think there has to be a distinction between the two, otherwise one could be overwhelmed by what might not get done. Don’t need burnout!
I probably really need a good planning session to figure out all the projects and then decide what is the most advantageous to take the time to do. I gave up a few things that just took far too much time out of my day. They are important, but at this particular time they are not the best use of my time.
This is definitely a good time of the year to think about a fresh start to start the year off right.

Yep, that red wine will get you everytime
Glad to hear that your crazy year is coming to an end, I think we can all raise our glass to that one.
I think its a great idea to do a complete brain dump of all your ideas onto paper, or whiteboard etc..whatever the best medium is for you.
1. Its gets them out of your head.
2. There’s something about seeing things visually that allows you to see patterns and pull out what is most important.
Like you say its important to focus on the things that are most important to you, and you may find that certain words start to spring to mind when you look at what you want to do, that will serve as reminders to keep you on task.
Good luck with the planning, and here’s to hitting the ground running in 2013
I love this idea, a great way of cementing goals and changes you want to see in yourself as well as staying on the track you want to be on.

Funny isn’t it how the simple strategies can often bring the greatest results. Just the act of questioning yourself and challenging your decisions based on your focus words can work wonders on keeping you aligned with your goals.
Glad you found it useful Ben, and thanks for stopping by
My focus for 2013 is to move my affiliate to a higher level which will bring those dollars to settle the bills.
I’m working towards that and I know I will get there.
It’s good that you’ve set your target on what you want for the coming year. Persistence always pays off.
Thanks for stopping by.
