Brand Building Strategies

Building a brand was once only the domain of the multi nationals, it took big bucks and big market share to create presence and dominate the market.

But now we are well and truly in the era of the personal brand (like it or not).   Along with social media came the ability to create presence, build credibility, & get a foothold in the market, and the amount of money you have in the bank has absolutely nothing to do with it.   Its now all about Reach and Relationship thats the new branding currency.

There’s chatter everywhere these days about branding and I’m about to weigh in with my two cents, pence, pesos worth.

Branding is no more than how you are perceived by your market… their experiences…their interactions with you in their hearts and minds.  But its you that determines your brand message and personality, and how you do that is based around a few key areas and how you choose to communicate these to your market.

Lets take a look at you first:

  • Who are you – what do you have to offer.
  • What’s your point of difference – what makes you unique.
  • What do you want to do – what are you trying to achieve, your goals or objectives, who do you want to help.
  • What sets fire to your underwear – what excites the pant off you, what are you compelled to do.

These answers will become the foundational core of your Brand, from there you can develop:

  • Your Message – how clear and consistent is your message to your core foundation.
  • Your Credibility – keeping up your end of the bargain, building trust.
  • Your Relationships – how you foster your audience and engage to build loyalty.

Do yourself a favor and forget about all the other stuff….you know the logo, the color, the shapes, the sounds, that’s all peripheral, and you don’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of building a strong brand focusing on this stuff alone and unfortunately for many this is where they begin their branding exercise.

All great brands are built around a strong emotive responses, a connection, feelings….yep we are a touchy feely “has to have meaning” society.  Work with that, understand your market….what they need and want from you, and you will become a brand to be reckoned with.

What are your thoughts on branding, are you sick of the hype, do you feel its necessary, have you developed your own branding strategy.  Leave your comments below, I would love to hear from you.
